The direct lattice element about which a twin operation is performed. Twins are classified accordingly in:
- reflection twins, if the twin element is a lattice plane (the twin plane)
- rotation twins, if the twin element is a lattice direction (the twin axis);
- inversion twins, if the twin element is an inversion centre (the twin centre).
